Have you ever noticed that our best medications in terms of efficacy also have the worst side effect profiles? Lithium and clozapine are prime examples. They’re often the only medications that are effective, but their relatively unique benefits are also offset by equally striking risks.
But is the reverse true? Could medications with less concerning side effect profiles be efficacious in less severe cases?
Five RCTs in Mild Depression
Luckily, a new study examined just that. They performed a structured literature review to identify studies of medications, supplements and analogous interventions that focused on mild to moderate range major depression. Of the eight studies meeting their inclusion criteria, three had a high risk of bias leaving five studies of interest.
